Night Writing
2024
oak bark, steel wire, silver beads
10" x 10" x 4"
Invented by Charles Barbier in the early 19th century, Night Writing was a form of tactile writing meant to aid the French military in reading battlefield communications in the dark of night.
This piece of night writing is a small bark sculpture of a boat, also known as a barque. Night Writing was later simplified by Louis Braille. The raised silver dots inside spell 'barque' in Braille.
An object made with languages--visual, material, tactile, auditory.
